Overview

The function of LEGO Installation is to provide a platform for students to build the world they want in their own hands. The typical feature of lego bricks is the hand structure of lego characters. At the same time, the hand itself represents creation and inspiration. Building the world in lego’s hands fits perfectly with lego’s creative theme “rebuild the world.”

We hope to use this device to awaken the young generation’s need for imagination, discover the interesting part of the world around us through lego, and rebuild the world in our minds. The entire installation is about one person tall, and his angle can be changed by rotating. Young people can build blocks on the installation platform, transform the world around them, and share their works with people around the world through our app. You can also build works with others.

Background story

The LEGO® brand plays a big role in many kids’ lives. It invites them to imagine, build and play out whatever they have in their creative minds and it inspires everyone to see the world, and its endless possibilities, in new and playful ways.

However, there comes a stage when toys, such as LEGO® bricks, get forgotten. Leaving this sense of play and creativity behind, teenagers can lose their sense of imagination which has a knock-on effect on the potential to inspire important change. The LEGO Group want to change this.

Ideation

Sketch

sketch.jpg

As shown, the hand represents creativity and is a core idea of this work.

The installation is mainly placed on campus and in crowded places in cities. People can build the world they see on the installation hand. It can be a wild imagination and recreate a new world.

Reasons that can be implemented:

The learning life on campus is boring for young people. This device is placed on campus and will be widely welcomed as one of the few entertainment facilities. Secondly, it can enhance students' creativity and imagination. The original intention of the school is to give students a better future. This attribute can be recognized by the school. Cost and technology are acceptable to the company.

Installation design

Draft

a. I designed a platform at the Lego hand's buinding location to facilitate participants to build blocks on a horizontal surface.

Final effect

b. I changed the building center of the Lego hand to an arc shape, which is more convenient for the interspersing relationship between the blocks, and added a rotation function to the Lego hand.

c. I added a drawer to store the blocks in the lower part of the Lego hand. Participants can open the drawer and take out the blocks to build.

Discussion

Design problem

a. How does lego hand relate to rebuild world?

b. How does the activity increase participant creativity and problem solving?

c. Lego hand advantages and disadvantages of being placed only on campus?

d. What are the two media touch-points relevant for the target audience?

I developed a workflow in the group

I built a pen holder in the installation and imagined the pipes in the building as three pencils.

I built a rocket head in the installation, and I imagined the roof of the building as a pointed rocket

I built a waterfall in the lego hand, and looking at the side of the steps, I imagined the steps as a flowing waterfall.

I built a cat face in lego hand and I imagined the shape of the house as a cat .

AR App Ideation

Draft

First, we want to develop an online contest promotion plan for the lego hand device, At the suggestion of the teacher, we decided to make a matching app for lego hand.

The first idea is to allow students to build lego world at any time, and add the function of building blocks to the app. After the building is completed, the built blocks can be turned into a dynamic form.

After thinking about it, I defined the main function of the app as a lego world that can be taken away at any time. The use of AR technology enables users to increase the fun of hands-on creation.
